Scene veteran Zecoxao shared rumors that a Raspberry rp2040 based Modchip is on the way for Nintendo Switch. With the chip in question available for around $3 on most retailers like AliExpress, this could be a game-changer, when Switch modchips today cost upwards of $150 (installation not included).
$3 Raspberry Switch Modchip
In theory, it is very likely that by now some team of hackers have completely reverse engineered Team Xecuter’s SX modchip and its HWFLY clones. From there, porting the glitch code to a cheap SOC seems reasonable. Also, it wouldn’t be surprising that one of the many hackers on the scene got tired of the piracy modchip vendors and decides to shorten the whole process.
Also, Zecoxao isn’t the only one who mentioned this chip. Switch modding expert sthetix also chimed in, saying he knows but has no details. Zecoxao continued to state the chip will be compatible with OLED (Aula), Switch V2 (Mariko), but not with unpatched V1 (Erista). No word on Switch lite compatibility.
In other words, the rumor seems legit…to an extent.
The folks over at GBATemp discussed the rumor, where it initially started, based on a Craigslist post attempting to sell the mod under the name “pikofly” (in reference to HWFLY).
Craigslist’s offer itself seems shady, but some people have claimed that the Switch glitching with a Raspberry RP2040 is a possibility. Longtime member of the Switch scene CompSciOrBust took it a step further and said:
Yes we can. I know the developer. He asked some people (including me) to FUD here because he wasn’t ready to release lol. Some Russian dude testing it screwed it over trying to sell it.
In that original GBATemp thread, the craigslist vendor initially shared details about the pinout scheme:
7 PIN: 29 - D0 28 - CMD 27 - CLK 26 - RST 15 - SOC shelf
Of course one could easily falsify that information, but again, trusted people have claimed that this is legitimate.
$3 Switch Modchip, ETA wen
This rumor is most likely legitimate, but if the device is real, many questions will come next: when should we expect a release? Will the product be fully open source or will it be a competitor to existing HWFLY clones, with a slightly lower price tag? How much skills (and additional cables/hardware) will be required to install it yourself? sthetix in particular said:
PEOPLE!! Don’t get too excited about the RP2040.
I don’t know the details of how to use it, how it works, etc.
But, if it replaces the HWFLY for the OLED, I’m sure it needs other components like CPU ribbon cable and DAT0 adapter. And of course the same welding points

A fully open source solution, similar to what we’ve had in the past like the SD2Vita design for PS Vita, would be pretty awesome. It would lower the cost of modding the Switch and could enable significant innovation in that domain. On the other hand, if the person behind this mod knows that no one has released it before, it’s also possible that they’re trying to profit from it, instead of giving it away.
We’ll have to wait and see on that, but it could be an exciting day for Switch hacking. Anything that reduces the cost of modding Switch consoles would be great.
