World Cup Daily: France’s super-sub, Morocco’s incredible near-goal and more

France will face Argentina in the World Cup final on Sunday (10am ET on FOX and the FOX Sports app) after beating Morocco 2-0 at Al Bayt Stadium in Al Khor on Wednesday. France are the first holders to reach the World Cup final since Brazil in 1998. The last time they did so was in 1962.

Morocco’s tournament isn’t over, though, as they have a chance to play for third place against Croatia on Saturday (10am ET on FOX and the FOX Sports app).

Here’s everything that happened on Wednesday at the World Cup.

France 2, Morocco 0

Morocco had plenty of chances to equalize before France made it 2-0 up in the 79th minute – they even looked capable of taking the lead at times – but for the first time since the knockout phase began they were without any took advantage of his chances in front of goal. Such an efficient Moroccan team failed to score even with 13 shots on target. For context, he had 15 total shots in his previous two games.

That said, France has played its part. He was the favorite going into the match and it showed exactly why; the talent in his roster is world-class, and that’s what you need to win at this stage of the tournament. Argentina will have their work cut out for them on Sunday.

RESCUE OF THE DAY

Did Hugo Lloris rob the world of what would have been the goal of the tournament? Yes, but he was just doing his job. He also got a little help from the mail. Lloris finished the game with two saves.

ASSIST OF THE DAY

Kylian Mbappé didn’t take the lead in Wednesday’s Golden Boot race, however, he scored France’s second goal so perfectly he should have deserved it. Before Randal Kolo Muani slotted the ball in for his first international goal, Mbappé dribbled across the box and through the Morocco defence. Walid Regragui’s team defended well, but there was little they could do when Mbappé had the ball in the box.

GOAL OF THE DAY

To some, Theo Hernandez’s goal might have looked like a tap-in, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. To avoid the risk of shooting the ball over the crossbar, Hernandez extended his leg and hit the ball towards the ground and past the goalkeeper. That level of thinking and coordination made all the difference for France on Wednesday.

MOMENT TO SEE

Walid Regragui sold a dream to Moroccan fans and came close to realizing it. This could make Morocco’s elimination all the more painful, but Regragui is still a hero in his home country and always will be because of Morocco’s dream race.
